Volunteering means being always ready to face new experiences and, above all, open our hearts to people! It means appreciating the small gestures - every small endearments - and sometimes find the strength to smile, even when you are not in the mood :-)
4. As a volunteer...
As a volunteer I learned how to deal with the unpredictable and to work in a team, supporting each other.
I discovered many things about my self and, above all, I got a lot of new friends from different countries!
5. Describe shortly the most interesting/ inspiring volunteering project/experience you've ever participated in/had? :)
I took part in a project of the "European Volunteering service" called "Step Forward", in Latvia, from April 2014 till March 2015, in a Youth Center.
Here I was mainly teaching ballet and Italian language, but I also took part in the planning process of some local event...
The whole experience was just awesome. An incredible, big challenge!
But the aspects I most loved were: the smiles and the hugs I received from the children I was working with; and the incredible connection with the other volunteers!
And one, of the activities, I'm, probably, most proud of, is the flashmob I organized at the end of my project (thank's to my coordinator) which involved a lot of people.

I did an EVS in Estonia from 2009-2010. I had just finished school and wanted to do something useful, something that made sense, before going to uni. I ended up in Estonia, or as many volunteers put it: I didn't choose Estona, Estonia chose me. I worked with young adults with learning disabilities, cooking with them, doing handicraft, wood work, pottery and all sorts of free time activities. Maarja Küla is a live-in community and it really became my second family. I went back to visit a few times after I finished my EVS and it still feels like a home. Living in Estonia and learning Estonian was probably the best thing that could have happened to me.

... a small gap in our society everyday-life, where efficiency is not necessarily connected with appreciation
... a particular lifestyle which catches you from the first seconds on and will change you irreversible
... one of the few periods in your life, when working, partying/socializing and traveling are fitting perfectly together
... the chance to meet amazing people from other countries, get knowledge about their mindset

impressive people and their ideas of life which enrich you

4. As a volunteer...
I am a german volunteer working in Warsaw/ Poland already for 7 months with mentally disabled adult people. I'm working and living in the same place together with the residents and to be honest I wasn't happy about it at first. But this particular occasion to live with these people together in a completely unusual ''flat share'' I appreciate now a lot. If it's 7 o'clock on Saturday morning, you arrived two hours ago from the latest party with a head like volcano, a serious lack of sleep and it's knocking constantly at your door you are for the first moment terribly enraged. Especially when the problem of the resident turns out to be a problem with the remote and that's in no case your topic. But you're going back to bed and you just feel so good, because this resident was running to YOU in the early morning for the repair of this remote and you really feel their honestly affection!
If I'm not up in the early morning I try to travel as much as I can in Poland, even to cities which don't provide so much sightseeing stuff, because the atmosphere of this country you cannot taste just in big cities.
And last but not least ...
...I definitely found out some things about me
... I was able to notice which important things the people for sure don't learn in the school-life and therefore how important such intercultural experiences are
... my mindset and knowledge about my neighbour country was widening and in my brain was rising a passion for it so I even want to study it
5. Describe shortly the most interesting/ inspiring volunteering project/experience you've ever participated in/had? :)
My current EVS is my first project in this context. But the variety of this service, beside my main task in the foundation is amazing. I took part in mini-workcamps ,,planting trees'' or I made one presentation in a school about me and my task here in Poland and the pupils were fascinated and wanted even more ...
But also the simple evenings, while just hanging around and discussing with other volunteers made me more ambitious and I got new ideas what to do with my life.

All the projects are special, and each is different, which is wonderfull :). But what I appreciate the most about the projects are people. Since everybody around volunteering is ready to listen and try to understand other´s people opinion and share. And even though all the people are special and different, it wonderfull to find always all across the world how much we all have in common :).

The most interesting projects is, I have been Italy for a project. The place calls CRACO " the ghost city". And there, we work about the biggest problem of that place. This place was real ghost city, because noone doesn't live there. When the night will be, there are no lights in there. It was hard project for me, but I am so happy to go there. Because, I help the local community and did something for them.It felt great to me. And I met many great friends from there.

The most interesting one was my first training in Italy where everything started :). A bunch of 25 Macedonians land in small village near Biella, where all the world was turned upside- down. Long and fulfilled days, crazy nights, meeting a lot of new people and making strong friendships - its more than enough forever to remember how everything started :)

In summer 2012 I've been in the workcamp "Tramplin" in Yoshkar-Ola, Russia.
It was a summer camp for children from orphanages.
I did not speak any word of Russian, but I had there the best time of my life. My tasks were to give presentations about my country (Germany) and to participate in activites with children.
In short description:
* 3 weeks camping, no electricity, no hot water in the middle of nowwhere in beautiful Russia
* taking the shower in a river
* every evening campfire and tea
* every day doing sport, walking, hear new stories
After this workcamp I knew I would come back to Russia, and tadaaa - now I am EVS - Volunteer in Kirov, Russia!
And here you can find photos from the workcamp described by Tina:

My EVS project was really great. Thanks to EU (EVS is just great organized and gives the opportunity to learn and develop - so if you have a chance to do it, don't hesitate!). I could spend five months in Stuttgart, Germany working for an organization IBG which organizes and coordinates international workcamps.
Firstly, the very idea of workcamp is great! You work together with an international group at the project for local community and at the same time enjoy the culture and customs of hosting country. I worked with children and teenagers and second workcamp was about ecological work. You never get bored, you are spending time with nice people and some of them become your best friends, you are totally out of real life and enjoy it a lot. There is so much going on during two weeks that it might be the most intense and exhausting but at the same time rewarding experience. I was both participant (twice) and coordinator (three times) and I am actually not done. If you are teenager, it gives you a chance to participate, travel and do something different; if you are a student or graduate, you can lead a project and just for a moment forget about studies and pursuit of career. Secondly, IBG gives you a wonderful support and preparation which I appreciated a lot.
Just to sum up - most of my best volunteering experience took place in Germany, mostly by workcamps but also working in an office as an EVS intern. I met great people and I had a wonderful time and it gave me not only new perspectives but also even more motivation to do something more.
Check out the IBG's website here: http://www.ibg-workcamps.org/

A Youth exchange in my country (Serbia) in 2013 with great-great people! It is amazing how inspiring some people can be! Also I have learned a lot of myself: that I CAN!
Now I am on EVS in Hungary, I can't wait for this year to be unforgottable!
Below you can find a photo and a video of Youth Exchange which Anett described. :)

3. Volunteering is…
Dedicating your time to what really matters. Working without stress, without frustration, for a “thanks” rather than for money; getting paid in ideas, in knowledge, in smiles; having a break for a coffee or a beer whenever you can Meeting other volunteers and share your stories. Also having time to reflect about yourself. Accepting no compromises.
4. As a volunteer…
I traveled a lot, I shared my knowledge (cooking, communication strategies, stories) but I have mostly reviewed my knowledge of my own culture (and asked Google for the answers); I got to know better my roots, my identity, what's worth to talk of and what's too sensitive for making jokes. I explored different cultures, and I realized more what I love, what I seek for and what I stay far away from. I've experienced on my skin that all cultures share the same values and we all were born with the same features.
5. Describe shortly the most interesting/inspiring volunteering project/experience you've ever participated in/had? :)
In my hometown, in Italy. A festival dedicated to theater, with two companies from Romania (where most of immigrants come from to Italy). It was actually a lot more: workshops, journalism, food, dance. I picked up the companies at the airport, I cleaned dust and rust from an abandoned cinema, I helped in many other different ways. It was a magic experience that opened minds and hearts and changed the lives of the participants. Have a look at the documentary of this festival:
During his EVS Francesco has also created a similar project. Here you can see his blog:

3. Volunteering is…
To me, volunteering is about sharing experiences with people; getting to know them, where they come from, who they are and where they plan to go and what for. It is about discovering their culture, discovering new aspects of mine and introducing them to it. It is about helping people by sharing words, ideas, actions and time.
I would say that volunteering helps you to grow up, broad your mind and your perspectives, your comprehension of the world and of the people who part of it.
4. As a volunteer...
As a volunteer, I try to help as much as I can. I try to be around and make sure people can count on me whenever they need me. I am searching for exchange of every sort of knowledge. I try to share all I've seen, learned and try to learn as much as I can from them.
5. Describe shortly the most interesting/ inspiring volunteering project/experience you've ever participated in/had? :)
My best experience as volunteer was definitely my EVS in Poland. I've met great people from different origins, with different backrounds. I got to know a country and its culture, learned how to become independent and to take responsibilities. I travelled, shared stories/laughs/songs/feelings and emotions. I still have great memories from that period and a bit of nostalgia too.
Another great experience: my workcamp as co-leader in a center for refugees of Red Cross in Belgium. I met people with intense and sometimes dramatic experiences but still full of hope and positiveness! besides the guys of my group were just awesome. It has been amazing 3 weeks!

So it was my second project - last summer in Mexico. It was amazing, because in the very first moment I was scared - I was sitting in a plane and thinking: "What on earth am I doing?!". But then it turned out to be my best experience ever.
First of all, people there are really very friendly and they care about you. So I was never alone. Secondly, Mexico is a beautiful country - the landscapes, the weather, the sea... Also my work was very inspiring - I worked with little children from primary school. And even though my Spanish was rather awful, they loved me and try to communicate in every language (I mean English/German/Spanish/Polish- it was a total mixture).
But the best thing about this project is fact that I made friends for ever and we're still in touch :).

My short-term EVS in Mugla, Turkey in May 2013. It was simply amazing! Working side by side with 30 other participants from 23 different countries to organize the city's festival. I participated in a flash mob, tried hitchhiking, went on blind dates, learned Turkish, meet my new best friend from Beograd, Milena and many other good friends.

5. Describe shortly the most interesting/ inspiring volunteering project/experience you've ever participated in/had? :)
I would answer in a little bit "upside-down" way..
For me every project has minimum few layers to think about and to experience...
Firstly, I've participated in few well-organized trainings, where I have learned a lot, when I was so amazed by great selection of methods, professional approach of trainers, etc.. (one example: training for trainers in summer 2013 organized by INEX in Slovakia).
Secondly, almost in every volunteering project I took part in, I got a chance to have unforgettable, inspiring informal chit-chats, meetings, conversations, etc. with new people with their stories, their unique ideas, amazing memories, innovative projects... good example of it would be Training for Youth Leaders as a part of Youth in the EU and China: Working Together to Common Challenges project which I attend in summer 2012, the TfT I have mentioned above, on-arrival in Sarajevo for EVS volunteers (I'm currently EVS volunteering in Serbia :)) and each of workcamps
I have attended in my life (four- so far :)).
Greetings!
Aleksandra
